  • Dear Friend,

I’m sure you’re dealing with the pandemic the best way you can. We are all trying to cope. But some of us need more support. I’m hoping you are in a position to help those who need it.

People like Estelle (name changed), who retired to Hallandale Beach, after falling in love with the community Friday night dinners. She continued coming regularly to Chabad’s social events and found company, connection, and community. Now, she is too frightened to leave the house - even for something as simple as grocery shopping. She is immune-compromised and is very worried about catching the virus.

Or Jonathan (name changed), a young husband, and father of 3. He recently relocated and found a good job, and was proud to be able to support his family. When the virus hit, so did all his financial security, he was laid off, and is struggling to feed his family. This virus is tearing him apart.

Then there’s Neil (name changed), 81 years old, living in Hollywood Beach for the last 20 years. He loves spending time with his grandchildren who frequently visit him, but he hasn’t seen them since March.  He has been Isolated in his condo on the 20th floor while also being a caretaker for his ailing wife. Our precious grandparents need connection with their families. And we need to connect with them for their love and wisdom.

We all depend on community. It gives us meaning. It gives us strength. It makes us who we are! But how can you and I create a close community when we need to be physically far apart? I’ll tell you how we can.

Your donation of $180 - or any amount - makes it possible. Here’s how:

    1. We can deliver Shabbat . We can pack "Shabbat in a bag" to deliver to community members - bringing the flavor of fresh-baked challah bread and traditional Shabbat delicacies. Standing on doorsteps in our masks, we will reinvent the power of Shabbat to unite and uplift. Can you be part of the Shabbat connection?

    2. We can inspire them with Torah . When quarantine orders came through and shut down our classes - we took them online. A funny thing happened on Zoom - more people tuned in. More questions were asked. More discussions happened. We found ways to be together when the world told us to be alone. Please keep the classes going strong!

    3. We can help each other. With programs like Rosh Hashanah 2 Go.  Beach Side Shofar Blowings. Zoom learning. Personal check-ups and meal deliveries for the elderly.

There are so many who need connection right now. We have to remind them that they are not alone. Send them Shabbat in a bag. Send Judaism to go. Let them know that we, as fellow Jews, will always be there to help.

If $180 is a lot for you right now, any amount will help. If you can give more, please do so. Whatever you can give, please know that whatever you send will be put to good use. Every penny.

Sincerely and with warm wishes for a sweet new year,

    Rabbi Leibel Kudan

P.S. Please consider a gift of $180 today to help Estelle, Jonathan, Neil, and so many Jewish people living alone in Hallandale/Hollywood Beach.  They need your help to be connected to their Judaism, community, and heritage.
